Here I am visiting a wholesale nursery in Norfolk where they unusually grow plants in fields, and also on a very large scale beneath the huge East Anglian skies.
On a wonderful summers day, there were fields of geraniums, iris, astilbe, salvias, hemerocallis, stachys and many others. To be able to walk around in such light and compare the different varieties was intriguing and fascinating. The plants in the photographs are all 2 years old, and will be lifted in the autumn ready for sale as bareroot plants. They are packaged in recycled compostable material and sent out, so no plastic pots! The plants are also a third of some prices, and strong and vigorous.
The fields are then planted with barley, that is used for malting, as a break crop between the nursery planting.
