A Paxos Garden

On the beautiful Greek island of Paxos four dilapidated and neglected buildings were to be combined into one family home, but their individual situation and charms were to be carefully kept and enhanced. There was no existing garden, and the tarmac parking was in the centre of the buildings.

A new entrance and driveway needed to be made, and the different levels embraced as an advantage and not viewed as a difficulty. The amount of time that was spent in thinking out what might be done was remarkable, but so well spent! The inspiration came, and is there in the house and the garden to be seen now. What a fascinating journey the whole process has been!

The planting is still young, and it will only get better in the years ahead. We were so lucky to have the ancient olive, pear and pomegranate trees, we added more cypress and a new old olive to place by the front door to join the others nearby. They have all settled in well!

The garden is intended to be at its best during the summer months, so fragrant and local favourites are predominant including jasmine, iris, lavenders, salvia, wisteria, myrtle, bougainvillea, carob and rosemary, all of them loving the sun and heat, and the Mediterranean air.
